Labor Trafficking

Scenario 1 MARKET

Story –

Ekk had been strugging financially, so he decided to move with his son in search of work. Travelling by train with a few other men, Ekk arrived at his destination expecting to meet his prospective employer. Instead, he was taken by surprise, greeted by two men who ushered them into the back of a ute filled with other men. From there, Ekk and his son were taken to a local market and forced to work long hours as a labourer with no breaks and little food.

Information

Labour trafficking of men and boys is a common occurrence in South-East Asia. Often men will move away from their homes and families for work. Those who come to Thailand undocumented find themselves at the mercy of their employers, some who choose to exploit them, knowing that they cannot speak up for fear of deportation or arrest. Through fear of shame, many victims do not speak of their abuse. A21 is able to work with men and boys in labour trafficking situations and help them secure freedom and be reunited with their families.

Forced Begging

Scenario 3  sTREET BEGGAR

Story –

Pon was sold into trafficking by his uncle as an infant. Travelling across borders and through the hands of many strangers, Pon found his way to his handler. Every day for hours on end, Pon was given to a lady, drugged, and used essentially as a prop, helping to earn money.

Information

Forced begging, particularly of minors, is far too common in South-East Asia. Pon is one of many victims. A21 Thailand frequently works on cases involving young children, like Pon, who have been separated from their families and forced to beg on the streets of tourist destinations. All too frequently the children experience abuse. Thankfully through the work we do on the ground, we have been able to assist cases like Pon's and ensure that these children are removed from harm and placed in safe and loving environments.

  • Forced to sit in the same place for prolonged period of time.
  • Asleep, often drugged and/or unconscious.
  • Appears dirty and wearing ill-fitting clothes.
  • Be begging out late at night, in red light districts.
  • Signs of abuse and malnourishment (denied food, water, sleep, and/or medical care).

About

Can You See Me? is a campaign that aims to bring awareness on the millions of men, women, and children who are currently trapped in human trafficking and exploitation across the world. Through collective action, human trafficking identification and rescue will increase making it difficult for traffickers to operate.

Thailand is a transit, source, and destination country for human trafficking. Millions of individuals and families migrate into Thailand each year, increasing the risk and vulnerability to trafficking and exploitation. Many cases involve minors, mostly unaccompanied.

By partnering with law enforcement, governments, businesses, and NGOs, our goal is to turn awareness into action.
